Young-Jae Lee

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Keramische Werkstatt Margaretenhöhe (Margaretenhöhe Ceramic Workshop) in Essen, the Hetjens Museum in Düsseldorf is currently presenting the work of Korean-born ceramicist Young-Jae Lee in its special exhibition. The internationally acclaimed ceramicist has been running the workshop on the World Heritage site of the former industrial complex since 1986.

Today, Young-Jae Lee’s work can be seen in exhibition centres in Europe, the United States, Korea and Japan. In her understated idiom, Lee’s timeless creations combine Korean influences with the functional design concepts of the Bauhaus tradition. Her oeuvre includes generously crafted bowls, sleek cylindrical vessels, gracefully executed tea ware and iconic “spindle” vases: forms and proportions based on traditional geometric principles combined with gentle colour gradients of complementary mineral glazes.

The exhibition offers an expansive staging and historical overview of the long-standing ceramic tradition of Margaretenhöhe, which dates back to the early 20th century. The exhibition in the Hetjens Museum runs until 1 September 2024.
