Siegburg Stoneware

Siegburg Stoneware

The picturesque German town of Siegburg, between Cologne and Bonn, is always an enjoyable place to visit in July when it hosts the annual Siegburger Keramikmarkt. This year included ceramicists from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and Austria (with the amazing work of Josef Wieser). It was also nice to see that the UK was represented by Russel Coates, who threw off the shackles of Brexit to make the journey!

Also situated on the market square is the Siegburg Stadtmuseum, which has a wonderful presentation of the history of Siegburg pottery, dating as far back as the mid-12th century and which was traded throughout Europe.

Images 1 and 2 show a collection of typical Siegburg ware, image 3 is a 16th century three-footed slipware pot excavated in the town, image 4 is an assortment of artefacts, including some interesting pottery, dug up from a local well, and images 7 and 8 are ceramic wall sculptures by London-based artist Regina Heinz, who together with Mimi Joung are currently holding an exhibition in the museum until 27 August. The exhibition Rule Breaking: Reflecting pasts – imagining futures forms an unusual yet apposite juxtaposition between traditional Siegburg utilitarian pottery and contemporary ceramic art.

If you’re interested in learning more about Siegburg stoneware pottery, I would suggest getting a copy of Marion Roehmer’s Lebenwelten Siegburger Steinzeug, 2022, ISBN 978-3731912484.
