Obituary Carol McNicoll

Obituary Carol McNicoll

3 March 2025

. . . . . . . . .

More sad news again today with the announcement of the passing away of influential ceramicist Carol McNicoll.

Carol McNicoll was born in Birmingham in 1943 and was among a group of radically inventive graduates of the Royal College of Art in the early seventies. Together with other members of the “Gang of Four” (Alison Britton, Jacqueline Poncelet and Jill Crowley), whose work underpinned the “New Ceramics” movement, she would go on to have a major influence on the ceramic art scene and pave the way for younger generations. She has been called “the most iconoclastic vessel maker of all the RCA graduates” and treated pottery “with breathtaking audacity”.

A sad loss to the ceramics world.
