David Trueb’s 1,920 cups

. . . . . . . . .
The Swiss-Portugese potter David Trueb of Clay Kitchen Portugal was in Keramikmuseum Westerwald on 14 and 15 June to present his Wood-firing Project during the annual ceramics market in Höhr-Grenzhausen. The project “1,920 Cups – Understanding Wood-firing” is a research experiment aimed at gaining a better understanding of how various glazes, clay types, kiln position and firing duration actually respond to and are affected by the wood-firing process. Not satisfied with “That’s just the way it is” answers, David wanted to dig deeper to comprehend the systematic behaviour and interactions at play. The immense scope of the exercise meant an intensive production and testing procedure across several months. It resulted in no less than 1,920 cups, each an individual research project in itself! Although the experiment raised many new questions, David regards the whole exercise as the beginning of a long-term research process.
If you would like to find out more about the finer details of the project, I’m sure he would be more than willing to share his knowledge with you.
