Kerbschnitt und Feuerfarben – Carved by Hand, Coloured by Fire

Raeren Pottery Museum on the Belgian-German border south of Aachen is presenting a special exhibition of ceramic work by Sabine Steinbock and Harry Koll from 17 May to 27 September 2026.

The exhibition Kerbschnitt und Feuerfarben – Carved by Hand, Coloured by Fire celebrates the 50th anniversary of their ceramics workshop.

Harry Koll and Sabine Steinbock have been working together in their studio since the early 1970s and are deeply committed to the traditional ceramic technique of incised patterns. They have adapted and developed this ancient form of decoration to create their own unique designs and employ it on their bowls, platters, vases and other vessels to bring out the interplay of light and shadow and the natural colouring of the clay. Inspired by historical ceramics from both the Far East and Europe, they have spent decades developing their own distinctive style, which combines precision, creative experimentation with form and the natural effects of firing (anagama, saggar and raku), lending each piece its own character and personality.

The opening of Kerbschnitt und Feuerfarben will take place on Sunday, 17 May 2026 at 14.00.

"Much is now being 'said' in clay... we see the beginning of the potted word."
